I know that the holidays are only a distant memory right now, but I wanted to share a quick and easy project I made back then. For everyone in a redecorating mode; that would be me thankyouverymuch, this is for you.
For my project I decided to make 2 square pillows measuring 45 x 45 cm.
You will need
- Pillow stuffing
- 1 m lightweight woven fabric in white or cream
- 1 m designer fabric
- 2 40cm zippers in a color matching your designer fabric
- Matching thread
How to make the pillow
Cut your lightweight fabric in a rectangle measuring 45cm wide and 92 cm long. Fold it in half. Sew the sides as shown in the diagram below. Serge or zig-zag the edges to prevent fraying. Turn it inside out and fill it with pillow batting until it gets as puffy as you want it. Sew the opening and again serge or zig-zag the edges to prevent fraying. That’s it!
Moving on to the pillowcase.
How to make the pillowcase
Again cut your fabric to the required dimensions. Serge or zig-zag the raw edges. With RTS (right sides together) fold the fabric in half. Measure 45cm from the fold and using chalk draw a line parallel to it. Sew on top of it, using it as a guide, using matching thread and a straight stitch.
Time to sew the zipper now. Place your zipper with the teeth side facing down. Pin it in place. Now, using your zipper foot, sew a straight stitch (2.5 in length) creating a rectangle around the zipper. I suggest running more than one stitch at the top and bottom of the zipper for added strength, Open the zipper. This is VERY important. OPEN the zipper. Sew a straight stitch along each side of the pillowcase. Turn inside out.
Insert pillow into the pillowcase and enjoy!
